Having a blacksmith punch can really be useful around your work area. There are many different types of punches and they can be used for different things.
Do you find yourself needing to mark metal before heating? If you’re like every other blacksmith we know, you need a “guide mark” for starting a drill bit.
Marking that spot will work much better than a marking pen because of the impression it creates. It’s important that the drill bit keeps from skipping or wandering on the metal. The punch helps you to keep it going in the right direction.

What Are the Safest and Best Punches for Blacksmithing?
Always be sure to look for a punch that has a handle. This is because a handle provides the element of safety.
Punching can be done hot or cold, but it’s mostly done when the metal is hot. Punches that don’t have a handle are usually about two feet long so you don’t get too close to the hot metal.
If you choose a punch with a handle, you’ll be able to get a little closer when working on the task at hand.

This punch set has it all. The 16 pieces make having the right tool on hand easy. I use a lot of different punches and chisels while I forge so I appreciate that this set has a wide variety.
I have found that these tools are able to cut or punch through any piece of metal without compromising their shape and integrity. They are made from high quality steel that has yet to bend or warp, even through frequent use in extreme temperatures.
The shanks are hex shaped which makes gripping and holding onto to these punches easy. I have larger hands and sometimes find that I have a hard time gripping punches, I don’t have that issue with this set on eBay.
There are three cold chisels included in the set that I tend to use a bit less than the other punches, but I have tried them out and they are of the same quality and I appreciate that Astro included a myriad of different types of chisels in the set, it is a lot easier than going out and buying each one of these separately.
So far, the only downside I have seen (if you can call it a downside) is that the plastic tray that the chisels come in is cheaply made. But, if you are like me and most other blacksmiths, you keep your tools in a tool pouch or in your apron. I took the set out of the tray and organized them in my tool pouch so it is not really an issue for me.
Anyone who is looking to start their forging tools collection would be a miss to not purchase this chisel set. It has everything you need to get started with forging without having to buy each piece separately.
You will also be ready to expand your tool-set. Have you found the perfect blacksmith Anvil yet?
